Bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile (of the Punch Brothers) have announced a second release, Bass & Mandolin, due out September 9. “We have grown a lot as a collaborative entity between our first recording and now,” said Meyer, referring to the distinguished duo’s acclaimed 2008 debut, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile.
Both MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipients (Meyer in 2002, Thile in 2012) and multiple Grammy Award winners, the two have been collaborating for 15 years and performing live together intermittently for over a decade.
“Chris is comfortable with all kinds of improvising, with lots of different musical feelings and rhythmic feelings,” said Meyer. “With him I can do anything I want.” In fact, it seems as though these two musicians can play almost anything they want; Bass & Mandolin sees the pair shining on multiple instruments, with Meyer on piano and Thile on guitar. Just after the album hits, the pair will set out on a month-long North American tour on September 16.
