Leonard Cohen surprised attendees of his fan convention in Ireland this weekend when he announced that he will be releasing a new album in September. The album, which is going by the title Popular Problems, does not have a specific release date yet, though Amazon France is claiming that the album will be available on September 22nd.
The news was announced through a statement written Jarrko Arjatsalo, an accountant who runs Cohen’s website and serves as a liaison between Cohen and his fanbase. Arjatsalo later confirmed the news to Rolling Stone, saying that the info came directly from Cohen himself. Arjatsalo was quick to assert that the new album was all that we could expect from Cohen this year. “There are no tour plans!” Arjatsalo wrote. “We are now looking forward to a great new studio album.”
Cohen had previously hinted at new material while touring behind his last album, Old Ideas. “I rehearsed some of these songs on the road-new songs that didn’t make it on to the record,” Cohen told RS in 2012. While he has since performed a few of these songs in concert, there’s no word on whether or not they will appear on Popular Problems.
