He’s been putting out albums for almost 40 years, but Tom Petty has never released an album that hit #1 on the Billboard charts…until now. Hypnotic Eye, Petty’s newest album with The Heartbreakers, has debuted at the top of the charts, marking the first time that Petty has accomplished the feat.
With sales of 131,000 copies in its first week, Hypnotic Eye is the best-performing Petty album since his 1994 solo venture Wildflowers. Part of the reason behind the album’s success is likely due to Petty making the album available for sale to anyone buying tickets for his tour on Ticketmaster. While sales of the album via Ticketmaster were relatively low, they still counted towards the final Billboard tally. Given that Petty is also one of the world’s most popular live performers, that strategy probably worked better for him than it would have for other musicians.
