This year, R.E.M. are revisiting their relationship with visual media and MTV in particular with a six-DVD set that includes a feature-length documentary about the band’s career. Today, Pitchfork premiered a clip from the documentary that focuses on one of the darker chapters in the band’s history.
The massive arena tour behind Monster was R.E.M.’s biggest tours, but it also caused them the most problems. In the clip, the band discuss the various health problems that they contended with, including the infamous incident when Bill Berry suffered a burst brain aneurysm during a performance. The band also touch on bassist Mike Mills’ abdominal surgery that caused them to cancel a show in Prague, as well as Michael Stipe’s hernia operation that almost led to the make-up show in Prague being cancelled again. Stipe even shows a reporter his hernia scar, so be prepared for that. You can watch the clip below:
