JJ Grey is the ultimate southern boy. Still living on his family’s farm in Jacksonville, he derives a sense of roots and spirituality from his home that informs the infectious, life-affirming brand of soulful southern rock he creates with his band, Mofro. Sticking to his guns as a country boy who tells it as it is, JJ Grey & Mofro have grown over the years from a small act into a critically acclaimed outfit, touring and playing major festivals around the world.
“Every Minute,” which you can listen to here, is the first single from their soon to be released album, Ol’ Glory. Unfolding in a tender, passionate croon, almost like a sermon with its building, repetitive edge, JJ Grey tells us the tale of a full, happy, hopeful life, making it clear “I ain’t got the patience or time to live a life of despair.” The rest of the musicians that make up the septet of Mofro are Anthony Cole on drums, Andrew Trube on guitar, Anthony Farrell on piano, Todd Smallie on bass, Dennis Marion on trumpet and Jeff Dazey on saxophone. Together, they punctuate Grey with their talented, complex instrumentation, creating a rich, layered sound that takes the band from soul to funk to blues and beyond.
JJ Grey & Mofro heads out on an extensive tour starting this February, and Ol’ Glory will be released on Provogue Records February 24th and can be preordered on iTunes here.
