Robert Earl Keen is going back to his roots on his upcoming new album, Happy Prisoner. The album features interpretations of the bluegrass standards that inspired Keen to pick up music in the first place, with songs made famous by the likes of Bill Monroe, Hot Rize, and more. The album also features several collaborations with the likes of Lyle Lovett and former Dixie Chick Natalie Maines, who sings with Keen on the folk standard “Wayfaring Stranger.” Keen and Maines play off of each other very well here, their voices set up in an interesting contrast. Guest musicians Danny Barnes and Sara Watkins shine, as well. You can listen to the track now (via Rolling Stone)
Happy Prisoner comes out on February 10th on Dualtone Records
