Ray Benson & Asleep at the Wheel have announced the release date and track list for their upcoming Bob Wills tribute album, Still The King: Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys.
Wills, the “King of Western Swing,” along with his Texas Playboys, rose to fame in the 1930s and ’40s, helping to popularize American country music. Asleep at the Wheel, preeminent Western swing musicians and nine-time Grammy award winners, have released two other albums dedicated to Wills since the group was founded in the 1970s, demonstrating their unending quest to keep his memory and musical traditions alive.
Wills was one of very few to have received the honor of being inducted into both the Country Music and Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, so it’s fitting that the collaborators on this tribute album include artists across genres and generations. The long list of musicians to be featured on the record blends industry greats as well as up-and-coming artists: the Avett Brothers, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Brad Paisley, Merle Haggard and Kat Edmonson, to name a few.
The album, which comes out on March 3 on Bismeaux Records can be pre-ordered through PledgeMusic and iTunes, with pre-orders including an immediate download of “Tiger Rag,” a track featuring Old Crow Medicine Show.
