Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash is now likely best known for J.K. Simmons’ Oscar-winning turn as a ferocious, intimidating jazz professor at a prestigious New York City conservatory. Undoubtedly, however, the movie’s true brilliance lies in its moral ambiguity. Though physically and verbally abusive to the members of his elite studio band, his aggressiveness reaches new highs when he finds a willing disciple in talented first-year jazz drummer Andrew Neiman (played by Miles Teller), who is prepared and eager to push himself beyond the breaking point in his pursuit of unrivaled excellence.
Look below for a clip from a special featurette from the film’s just released Blu-ray, highlighting the experiences of several renowned drummers (including Kate Schellenbach of Luscious Jackson, Simon Phillips, longtime drummer for Toto, and Roy McCurdy of Cannonball Adderly’s Quintet and Blood, Sweat & Tears) as they discovered their love of music and entered the professional circuit.
