For their 20th anniversary, Gov’t Mule have been stretching out and showing their considerable talent with interpretations of other songs. Most recently, the band are preparing to release the third in a series of high-concept live albums, Dub Side Of The Mule. The album, taken from a 2006 show at the Beacon Theater in New York City on New Year’s Eve, features Mule pairing up with Toots Hibbert for reggae interpretations of Mule songs, Toots & The Maytals songs, and some other unexpected surprises.
Shockingly, the band take on “Let Down” from Radiohead’s 1997 classic OK Computer. The original song was a mournful lament characterized by swirling, layered guitars and Thom Yorke’s tortured vocals, but Gov’t Mule and Toots put their own stamp on the song. In their hands, the track becomes an almost defiant celebration, a statement of power. You can listen to their version of “Let Down” below.
Dub Side Of The Mule comes out on April 6th on Mascot Label Group.
