My Morning Jacket have confirmed the release of a new album this year. Titled The Waterfall, the album is set to come out on May 4th.
The Waterfall marks the first new material from My Morning Jacket since 2011’s Circuital and the first new music from anyone in the band since lead singer Jim James’ 2013 solo album Regions Of Light & Sound Of God. It’s the experimental sound of the latter album, as well as MMJ’s flirtations with new sounds on albums like Z and Evil Urges, that informs the music of The Waterfall.
“The freedom we went into this record with took a lot of the pressure off, as far as what to do and how to do it,” said drummer Patrick Hallahan. “The mantra was anything goes, no stone unturned, it’ll be done when it’s done.”
The Waterfall‘s first single, “Big Decisions,” feels like vintage My Morning Jacket with a few subtle tweaks. It’s one of the band’s most epic tracks, as well. Give it a listen below:
