Maybe the secret to a long, productive life is having great friends by your side. That certainly seems to be the case for Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, who have announced that on June 2nd, they’ll release a new album of country duets titled Django and Jimmie.
Since 1983’s Pancho & Lefty, the outlaw duo has teamed up on a number of releases, often paying tribute to their forbearers and musical pals. Django and Jimmie is no exception, the titular characters being Django Reinhardt and Jimmie Rodgers, tremendously influential legends in their own right.
The album is a collaborative effort, with Willie and Merle singing each other’s songs, and their producer, Buddy Cannon, chipping in as well with several songwriting credits. The record will also include a few brand new songs.
Clearly, Nelson and Haggard have this down to a science. The time it took to record this bad boy? “When we got into the studio,” Haggard told Rolling Stone, “it was probably three or four days, max.”
