Neil Young surprised fans with an unannounced, $10 gig at the SLO Brewing Company in San Luis Obispo, CA. Even more surprising was that he debuted a new backing band, most notably helmed by Lukas and Micah Nelson—sons of Young’s Farm Aid compatriot, Willie Nelson. In addition to Young and the Nelsons on guitar, the rhythm section consisted of Corey McCormick and Anthony Logerfo on bass and drums, respectively. McCormick and Logerfo are Lukas Nelson’s bandmates in his own band, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.
While this was their debut public performance, Young and the Nelsons are apparently hard at work on an album tentatively titled The Monsanto Years. Consistent with his long history of playing unreleased, unfamiliar music to adoring fans, Young primarily drew from this unfinished album for the set. But the band did also tear through some of Young’s classics, such as “Down By the River,” “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” and “Walk On.”
