A new, previously unreleased live album from big band leader and wildman drummer Buddy Rich (the one with the teeth) is set to be released on CD and vinyl. The album, titled Birdland, captures Buddy and his Killer Force band when they were at the height of their powers.
Interestingly enough, while the album has never been previously released, it appears in the Academy Award winning film Whiplash. In the film, Miles Teller plays a drummer who idolizes Rich and is, at one point, seen holding a copy of the unreleased Birdland album. In order to capitalize on the popularity of the film, the Buddy Rich Estate is finally releasing that album. Notably, the album’s digital release was pushed up to February in order to coincide with the airing of the Academy Awards ceremony.
Birdland will be released by Lightyear Entertainment and Lobitos Creek Ranch on CD on May 26 and on vinyl on June 23. It is currently available for digital download.

All Buddy’s bands were great but these years (1975-1980) were really something else. If anyone out there saw this band you know exactly what I mean. We were lucky to catch such musicianship. To those who missed it, we are all in luck. Many concerts were recorded! Thank God! The other live CDs from these years have been fantastic as is this one. Thank you Alan G. for recording the best big band in the world!
