Sam Lewis, like many a singer/songwriter before him, has traveled around the country before settling in Nashville to launch his career. Since coming to Music City, Lewis released his self-titled debut (in 2012) while touring both solo and with his backing band. Now, as he prepares to release his second album, Waiting On You, Lewis is releasing videos of him performing each of the album’s twelve songs live in studio, including our exclusive premiere of “She’s A Friend” below.
Lewis names John Prine among his influences and, on “She’s A Friend,” that influence is apparent, in terms of songwriting if not performance style. Like Prine, Lewis aims for pathos with, perhaps, just a bit of humor as he documents a relatable, slice-of-life experience. In the case of Lewis’s song, the topic is mending a broken heart with some no-strings-attached casual sex.
