Call it “newgrass” or “progressive bluegrass” or whatever you want: the fact remains that The Punch Brothers are working on a different level than most other artists these days. The group is easily the most talented collection of musicians ever assembled, even beyond MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Chris Thile. Each member is a virtuoso in their own right, but they all function as a solid songwriting unit, as evidenced by their most recent album Phosphorescent Blues. Seeing them live is something of a necessity, if only because this much talent has to be seen onstage to be believed. Check them out at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona.
