Karen Dalton remains one of the great underappreciated voices in American music. A fixture of the Greenwich Village folk scene, Dalton stood out from the crowd with intricate guitar work and a voice that recalled the likes of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. This year, Tompkins Square Records is releasing a collection of songs using Dalton’s previously-unreleased lyrics as interpreted by newer artists, including Lucinda Williams, Marissa Nadler, and Julia Holter, among others. The first track made available on this compilation, “Remembering Mountains,” features Sharon Van Etten on lead vocals, and it’s hard to think of a better person to interpret Dalton’s lyrics. Her powerful voice artfully conveys Dalton’s words of uncertainty as the speaker contemplates what to do with her life. You can listen to the track now at Stereogum.
