Last fall, singer/songwriter Toby Lightman stopped by the City Winery in New York to record a One On One session, including a solo, acoustic take on “Every Kind Of People,” the title track to her self-released fifth album. Stripped of the sleek production and smooth funk instrumentation of the studio version, this solo rendition emphasizes Lightman’s smoky, powerful vocals.
Lightman says, “‘Every Kind Of People’ is my view of living in the city. So many different people, roaming around, living their lives. All really looking for the same thing, happiness. The record of this song is super vibey and I love it, but I wanted to record a video of it acoustically to bring a little more attention to the lyrics and the story.”
After releasing two albums on an Atlantic Records subsidiary in the mid-2000s, Lightman has released her last three albums, including 2014’s Every Kind Of People, on her own T Killa Records. She has appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and NBC’s Today and has placed her songs in a number of movies, TV shows and commercials.
