“Is there life after rock ‘n’ roll?” asks Louie Perez.
Legendary Mexican-American band Los Lobos is coming out with Gates of Gold, their first full-length album since 2010’s Grammy-nominated Tin Can Trust, and they’re questioning rock ‘n’ roll and even life itself, in all its American glory.
For band members David Hidalgo, Louie Perez, Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano and Steve Berlin, with most of them being children of immigrants, the album has several levels of meaning. The “Gates of Gold” represent a greater idea of uncertainty, adventure and mystery. What may lie beyond those gates is the idea that keeps them journeying forward. As the new album’s title track says, “Which way do we go/Can’t say that we know.”
Using new and old ideas from throughout their five-decade career, they’ve found a new way of telling stories within the same band structure and sound that fans have come to love, all while retaining Perez’s deeply soulful poetry.
