Though Brian Mackey is no stranger to the music business, having been featured in TV and movies, as well as on compilations alongside songwriting greats such as Sara Bareilles and Ani DiFranco, he’s just now released his first full length album, Broken Heartstrings.
The singer/songwriter blends several genres, touching on country, pop, folk and beyond. One such example of this hybrid style is his new single, “The Day.” Imbued with a country-pop styling, the song touches on some traditional themes about tough luck and bad women. The video for “The Day” illustrates a tragic story of a girl who runs away from an impoverished, abusive household, and follows her along her bumpy road, sadness lurking behind her smile as she uses and abuses her body, doing whatever she must to survive on her own and fight off loneliness. Mackey’s strong vocal twang and measured guitar captures the sadness and pain of a life that seems inescapable… with no path to a happy ending.
