For fans of George Strait who didn’t get to his final concert at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on June 7, 2014, this DVD is the next best thing to being there. The disc brings Strait into the living room with as much emotion as can be captured from a live performance.
The man– dubbed King George by his legions of fans– welcomed a head-spinning list of special guests: Jason Aldean, Ray Benson, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride and son George “Bubba” Strait to join him on his last show of “The Cowboy Rides Away” tour.
The 40-song set included everything from early hits like “Unwound” and “The Chair” to more recent chart toppers, “I Saw God Today” and “I Got A Car.” It was impossible to fit in all of his 60 number one hits, yet Strait did his best, including “Let’s Fall To Pieces Together,” “I Can Still Make Cheyenne,” “Check Yes or No,” “Nobody In His Right Mind Would Have Left Her” and “Murder On Music Row.”
Each guest chose a song they wanted to sing with Strait, and from Church’s pick, “Cowboys Like Us” to Chesney’s choice of “The Fireman,” each song was a perfect match. Most of the guests have a history with Strait, many of them in as opening acts in the not so distant past.
This concert was the final good-bye for Strait, the last hurrah on a two year tour that ended his years on the road as a full-time touring artist. The Texas singer performed before 104,793 fans, a record-breaking event for indoor concerts.
