If supergroups excite you, then we’ve got some super exciting news. The Word, a gospel/blues/rock group made up of Robert Randolph, John Medeski and the North Mississippi All-Stars, is on tour in support of Soul Food, their sophomore album, which they released in early May to rave reviews after a whopping hiatus of 14 years.
The Word brings together the best of three very talented but very diverse sets of musical influences– the pop and funk of Robert Randoph, John Medeski’s avant jazz stylings and the swampy blues rock of the North Missippi Allstars. Together, the band generates an electric blend of old-school Gospel with a heavy helping of their own modern style.
The Word will stop through New York City with a show at Webster Hall on October 16th, and if you don’t catch them now you just may have to wait another 14 years. If you haven’t already whipped out your credit card, here’s one more treat: Amy Helm & the Handsome Strangers will be opening. Buy tickets here.
