It seems lofty, but in fact it may not be an overstatement to say that the Staple Singers are one of the most important American musical acts of the 20th century. After all, in just a few decades, they created a brand new sound in American music, fusing blues, county, folk and gospel in a way that would significantly impact the music to come after.
This month, Stax/Concord Music Group is releasing a career spanning collection of the group, Faith & Grace: A Family Journey 1953-1976, and Elmore has a copy for one lucky winner.
The four disc set also includes several never before released live recordings, a book of family photos and liner notes and an incredibly rare bonus: a 7” vinyl recording of the earliest known recording by the family group. Mavis Staples provides extensive commentary throughout the book, sharing her stories of her father, Pops Staples, and her musical siblings Pervis, Cleotha and Pervis.
