Gnarly Karma is a lyrical-jam/rock band hailing from the magical land of Long Island. Singer, guitar and harmonica player, Mike Renert, started the band along with drummer Jarrod Beyer. Soon they brought on bassist Ryan McAdam and Billy Hanley on saxophone to round out the group’s ambitious, genre-spanning sound. They band released their debut album, Classic Breeze, this past September, and today, they’re premiering their cover of Dave Matthews’ hit, “Grey Street.”
The band’s cover stays true to the original, but still offers a fresh update. Hanley’s saxophone chops mirrors the solo found on DMB’s version. Renert’s vocals have moments of softness, which he juxtaposes skillfully with hints of raspiness. The track is laid back and breezy… but what else would you expect from a band that stems from the same island as Blue Öyster Cult?
Check the guys out as they tour around New York in the next couple of months, including a headlining act at the Bitter End in NYC on April 16th. You can watch the boys perform “Grey Street” below.
