Founded in 1989 by harmony aficionados Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin, accompanied by bassist Dave Gay, alternative country band Freakwater has put out a discography unlike any other on iconic labels like Amoeba and Thrill Jockey. In support of their tenth studio album, Scheherazade, released just last week, the band is performing at Brooklyn’s The Bell House on tour with supporting artists Jaye Jayle, singer-songwriter, and Morgan Geer’s Drunker Prayer band (whom BLURT Magazine calls “A kickass Americana buffet stuff with folk-rock, bluesy shuffles, country gospel, rockabilly and ‘50s-ish pop…”).
Lauded for their lead vocal harmonies and country-folk melodies, Freakwater veers from the typical, opting instead to experiment as best they can with different country genres, creating a blend of intriguing instrumentals and gorgeous melody.
