Exclusive: Watch The Lyric Video For Swampcandy’s Sexy New Blues Track
Give ’em one listen, and you’ll realize– this Mississippi based duo can play just as hard as any fully backed band. Swampcandy is Ruben Dobbs on vocals and guitar and Joey Mitchell on bass, kick drum and percussive bass, and together they go full-throttle, filling up any space with their unique fusion of primitive blues, roots and Americana. Dobbs founded the band in 2007, but didn’t find his musical match until he met Mitchell, who cemented to lineup in 2010. Since then, the pair has won a series of awards, including top prize in the 2014 Floydfestival “On The Rise” competition and “Best Opening Act 2014” at the Ramshead Tavern in Annapolis, MD. They also tour internationally and exhaustively, sometimes playing close to 300 shows a year.
Today, Elmore is premiering the lyric video for “Drink Whiskey With Me,” a slinky, slow-burning track with a smokey blues style. Clarinets and thudding drums add an eerie, vaudevillian tone, and the addition of a female vocalist creates a sexy interplay between the male and female registers. The track is a wistful, drunken lament, or, as Dobb puts it, “what happens when your new gal can’t drink as well as your last gal, so you get a bit wistful after you’ve had a few and take pen to paper in a little room.” The eclectic video adds to the raw, swampy energy, with shots around blazing campfires juxtaposed against black and white footage of a woman in white, all alone. The video also flashes to shots of the band performing the track, while the lyrics play across the footage, highlighting the song’s woebegone poetry; “Drink whiskey with me/ the way we did by the riverside/ it was easy to see/ the future clear through an empty glass.”
