A creative mind’s always got something cookin’. For Miss Sophie Lee, that sentiment rings a bit more literally than most; as well as a singer/songwriter, she’s a renowned restaurateur in her home of New Orleans, one of the minds behind the trendy venue, Three Muses. Soon she’ll open a second local joint, Seoul Shack, which will celebrate her mixed race heritage by serving Korean/Soul food fusion. But from time spent in Chicago to her ultimate move to the crescent city in 2001, music has always been Miss Lee’s driving passion (aside from motherhood, of course). So I suppose you could say, for those lucky New Orleanians, she fills their bellies and their ears. On July 22nd, Lee released her fourth record, Traverse This Universe, on her own KingMoon Recordings. For the record- a follow-up to her 2013 release, Love Street Lullaby- she teamed up with acclaimed songwriter Luke Winslow-King and recruited over a dozen NOLA based musicians to create a fresh blend of her traditional jazz sensibilities with electric guitars, reggae, salsa, Dixieland, swing and more.
Today, Elmore is premiering the video for “Lovely In That Dress”– directed and edited by Jason Jurzak and shot by Killer Kowalski Productions– a lighthearted, loving romp through Frenchman street, perfect for the dulcet tinkle of keys and gentle strum of Lee’s ukulele. The subtle underpinning of horns mingled with Lee’s enchanting, Billie Holliday style rasp lend the track a timeless feel. With her colorful dress, big flower in her hair and huge smile, we follow the entertainer from the stage at the Spotted Cat to busking in the street with the most adorable backing band ever. Soon things get a little quirkier, as we’re reminded- with a wink- to be comfortable just the way we are.
Catch Miss Sophie Lee for free every Thursday from 6:00-10:00 PM during her residency at the Spotted Cat. For more info head to the Spotted Cat’s website here.
