He’s only 20 years old, but he wrote his first song at 15 and obviously is a quick study. Mason Lively grew up in the small town of Inez, Texas, population 2,000; Lacking big city stimulation, Mason looked to songs born long before he was, and learned to craft tales about pure and honest devotion, unabashed pining, the dreaded broken heart and the whiskey so often used to dull the pain. Lively was performing live at 15, and at 16 he was already in the studio cutting his first five-song EP.
Now, just a few years later, Lively’s gone back to The Zone studios in Dripping Springs, Texas to record his first full length album, Stronger Ties. Mason decided to let his genre flags fly and the result is a buffet-style feast of 10 original songs. From heavy guitar licks to blues to alt-country, Lively hits all his marks.
Of this cut, Lively told Elmore: “Early Grave” is a song I wrote awhile ago, I was probably 17 years old. It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve written. I never really knew which direction it should go once we got in the studio. When we play it live, it’s a rockin’, distorted number. In the studio, our awesome producer Pat Manske helped guide it towards a muddy contemporary bluegrass type vibe, and it just fits the song so well and really makes it pop. I love the way it turned out!”
Stronger Ties is Lively’s way of paying tribute to the music scene that he loves and is proud to be a part of. “This is me not only as a music artist, but also as a listener.” The new album releases on April 6th, 2018, and with it the new generation of Texas music magic.
