Listening to Judith Owen perform songs from her new CD, redisCOVERed, you will find your feet tapping nonstop, head bopping up and down and a constant smile on your face. She brings her own renditions to classic hits by Deep Purple, Joni Mitchell. Donna Summers and others but her own spin on these songs are so original that it is easy to be singing along for a few verses before you realize what the song is and who originally sang it. She makes songs such as “Smoke On The Water,” “Black Hole Sun,” and “Summer Nights” totally her own, and quite autobiographical.
Joined on stage at the Iridium on Broadway by Leland Sklar on bass, Pedro Segundo on percussion and guest saxophonist Mario Castro, Owen never stopped for a moment, and her sweet sexy voice (with a Welsh accent) captivates listeners.
The sound system at the Iridium (home to Les Paul, inventor of the electric guitar and doubletracking, among other things) was nothing short of flawless, delivering her wonderful voice and funny stories Owen told about her life with her husband Harry.
Owen pointed out that a great song’s power is that it stays with the listener, and that with headphones on, your life can become transported by music. Listening to her own songs as well as songs made famous by others with her own unique spin, it is quite easy to become transported into another place, one that keeps you smiling just by listening to Judith Owen sing.
