Premiere: Soulful Sam Huber’s Songs for Mona

Re-imagining George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity"

Often referred to as “The Funkiest Man in Finland,” Sam Huber is the embodiment of global soul. His new album, Songs For Mona encompasses a collection of ballads and re-imagined cover songs dedicated to his earliest—and perhaps most profound—influence: his mother.

Huber has made waves not only with his standing-room-only shows in NYC and his native Finland, but Amnesty International Finland has chosen the music video of his ballad “All The Time In The World” a to be a featured component of their Family Reunification Initiative, a response the refugee detention centers across the United States and Europe.

Here, with Huber’s rich, emotional baritone front and center, the lead single is a timely take on a George Harrison’s classic. The music video for “Isn’t It A Pity” was directed by cult filmmaker Dylan Mars Greenberg.

Elmore asked Sam Huber why he thought this song is important, and he told us, “The eternal message of love in ‘Isn’t It A Pity’ seems even more appropriate today in our modern world, where emotional coldness grows stronger all the time, and lack of empathy for our fellow man seems to be increasing. The simplicity of the words in this song are pure genius:

Isn’t it a pity, isn’t it a shame, how we break each other’s hearts and cause each other pain?…Some things take so long, but how do I explain, when not too many people can see we’re all the same. And because of all their tears, their eyes can’t hope to see the beauty that surrounds them. Isn’t it a pity?

“Yes, isn’t it a pity…”

Finnish artist Sam Huber will release Songs For Mona on True Groove Records. Sam Huber & The True Groove All-Stars will host the “Songs For Mona” album release event at The Bitter End in NYC, May 7th at 9 PM
