Nick Nace looks like a nice guy. That was my first thought looking at the cover of his CD. As he played on, my thoughts were, he sounds rather nice too. Nice melodies, clever lyrics, with good stories to hang them on.

By now I’d unfolded his one sheet (bio & PR stuff) and read the opening line about his living in Nashville, by way of Canada and New York City. My ear was also focused on what part of Canada he might of hailed from, as he sounded more like a Chicagoan. My best guess was the mid west around Windsor. But by now I was listening more and reading less.

By midway (also the name of a Chicago airport, BTW), Nick had me roped in pretty good, with “Her Favorite Dirty Joke” and a great feeling “Old Records.”By the time “Wake Up Next To You” rolled around, he had sealed the deal. He’s a nice guy, sings well, and he’s done some living, I don’t know how long he lived in New York City, but he avoided picking up any of that accent.

His closer,“Grandpa’s Old Guitar,” is a narrative that he wisely chose to record with just a solo guitar. However, ’cause he really is a nice guy, he saved a beautiful sonic surprise for us to end it with. Then I finished my reading about him. The last paragraph starts with“From Ontario, to the Big Apple to Music City.” Welcome to Nashville, Nick. I’ll be coming to hear you play soon.
