Although I met the irreverently charming and talented mischief maker and pastor a few times, my favorite memory is from a Johnny Carson Tonight Show. Little Richard showed up in a gold lamé harem outfit, complete with gold slippers.  Carson, who wore his trademark conservative suit and sly grin, sat as Richard rattled off his usual rapid-fire talking points. Carson pointed to Little Richard’s attire.

“Let me ask you,” Carson said, “does your wife like the way you dress?”

Without missing a beat, Little Richard shot back, “No, but she like the way she way she eat!”

Godspeed, Little Richard. There will never be another.
