After 10 years of full-time touring, Jesse Terry knows one thing: an artist can take nothing for granted. When We Wander is Terry’s first CD since becoming a parent.
With concerts and festivals canceled and his album release delayed by a year, Jesse pivoted to virtual concerts, where he found a strong new connection to his fans and learned make use of every second. The livestream concerts have “become the highlight of my week and the thing that sustains us emotionally and financially. And an amazing community has sprung up from these concerts,” Terry said.
When We Wander is the story of his life, literally and figuratively. Terry met his wife, Jess, while performing on a cruise ship, proposed at Nashville’s Bluebird Cafe; the two packed up for a tour immediately after, married on the journey and have been touring musicians ever since. Fatherhood has instilled the belief that you have to be the very best person you can be for your child because they absorb and mimic everything we do. On that score, “If I Were The Moon” is about the parental urge to love and protect: “If I were the moon, I’d light all of your back roads / You wouldn’t need no headlights / I’d always be full.”
Terry told Elmore about the making of this video. “In Feb 2020 we filmed a number of videos for the new album, and were staying in a historic cabin in Hendersonville, TN, and “If I Were The Moon” felt like the location’s perfect song. Besides having the moonlight shine through the window, the filmmakers Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt also projected a time-lapsed video of the moon onto the cabin’s original massive stone fireplace, and I love how the moon looks projected onto that stone! After the scene was set, it was effortless to connect to the emotion of the song, especially with my daughter running towards me for hugs and strumming on my guitar. It was way after her bedtime, but Lily seems to have an instinct to put on a great show when the lights are on and the cameras are rolling. It must be in her genes! I’m thrilled we were able to capture this little time capsule video and I’ll cherish it forever. The video was filmed right before the world stopped, which makes the whole experience feel even more idyllic and dream-like to me.”
A graduate of the Berklee College of Music, Terry spent five years as a writer on Nashville’s Music Row, penning material for shows like the CW’s Hart of Dixie, ABC’s Good Morning America, A&E’s Biography, and PBS’ Roadtrip Nation. His songs have won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest Grand Prize, the CMT/NSAI Songwriting Contest Grand Prize, and many other awards.
