Green Day have released the artwork for the first of three planned album releases. ¡Uno! Is to be released this September followed by the cleverly titled ¡Dos! in November and the hilariously named ¡Tre! in January 2013. ¡Tre! is set to feature a photo of drummer Tre Cool, a play on both the Spanish word for three and the third album.
The artwork unveiled for ¡Uno! displays a headshot of an unusually smug Billie Joe Armstrong, smirking over a neon green background with two bright pink crosses over his eyes. The cover was released via a 34 second youtube video showing a sneaky glimpse of the band jamming in a graffiti daubed studio with flashes of what may well be song titles on a white board, with names like “It’s Fuck Time”, “Makeout Party” and “Crushing Bastards”. Frontman Billie Joe, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool are all aged 42.
The most surprising aspect of the video is not the images it contains, but rather the music featured in the background, it sounds less like the Green Day the world has come to enjoy and more like Scottish indie rockers Franz Ferdinand.
¡Uno! will be the award winning Green Day’s ninth studio album with which the band will no doubt be hoping to achieve the same global success of their last two colossally selling records, 2004’s American Idiot and 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown, both of which topped the Billboard 200 chart. Whether ¡Uno!, ¡Dos! Or ¡Tre! will be made into a Broadway musical like American Idiot remains to be seen. We live and hope.
